In this unit we’ll be learning about how God has worked in history from New Testament times until the Reformation era, particularly focusing on the Western tradition of the church. We’ll discover the people, movements and ideas that made an impact – for better or worse. From the doctrine of the Trinity to Luther’s Ninety Five Theses, via people like St Francis of Assisi and events like the Crusades, we’ll see how people have followed Jesus in the past and reflect on how we can emulate their successes and learn from their failures.

This is the second foundational New Testament unit, following on from NT001 (Jesus and the Gospels). It provides an overview of the book of Acts, as well as six epistles and the book of Revelation. It focuses on the way in which the New Testament texts spoke into the lives and social situations of their original audience, guiding us in our understanding of how they still speak to us today.

The post-exilic prophets provide encouragement to God’s people in tough times. The focus of this unit is the book of Zechariah. Zechariah looks back over Israel’s history and seeks to explain why Jerusalem was overcome by the Babylonian empire. At the same time, Zechariah looks towards the fulfilment of the hopes of the earlier prophets for the establishment of God’s glorious kingdom, the kingdom that ultimately comes in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Zechariah is not the easiest book to understand, but it will certainly repay thoughtful work. Zechariah is the prophet quoted most often in the passion narratives of the Gospels. His book helps us to appreciate Jesus’ work even more and what it means to live in the light of his kingdom.

This unit teaches introductory skills in preaching, focusing on faithfully communicating the content and function of the biblical text to a contemporary audience. In the first half of the unit, a foundational model for preaching is taught: discerning the theological focus of the biblical text, mapping the flow of the sermon, and filling out each scene in the sermon with explanation, illustration, and application. The second half looks at aspects of sermon delivery, as well as topical and evangelistic preaching.
Compulsory Online Livestream Sessions: Wednesday evenings (7:30pm-9:30pm Sydney time), 30 November, 7 December and 14 December 2022.
Fieldwork requirements for this unit: for assessment, students will need to arrange an opportunity for themselves to complete 2 preaching engagements between 31 Dec 2022 and 26 Feb 2023.

In this unit we think about what theology is, and how we go about doing theology, including the practice of theology in every-day life. We will examine the four common ‘sources’ of theology—Scripture, tradition, reason, and experience, and explore the practices of evangelical theology. The unit will lay a good foundation for advanced study in specific theological topics.
