If you do, you’re not alone! Research shows that most people will change careers at least once during their lifetime. The average person is likely to have 3 - 7 careers before they retire. For the current and next generation of workers, this number is closer to 5 - 7 careers.
The most common reasons people have for making a career change can include:
Do any of these reasons resonate with you? If so, there are a few things you can do to prepare for next career change, while still in your current role.
Reflect on your life and career. Taking the time to regularly process your current role (e.g. whether you’re fulfilled and engaged; whether your work aligns with your passions) can help you identify when it’s time to make a move.
Nurture professional relationships. A network of professional contacts is very useful when making career changes. Maintaining relationships with peers and mentors may open doors that otherwise would’ve been locked, and you never know when you paths may cross again.
Take advantage of professional development. Don’t miss any learning opportunities your employer makes available. Broadening your capabilities and keeping your knowledge current is key to a career change. It may even provide the spark of inspiration to make your next career move.
Take up part-time study. There are some careers where you may need to return to tertiary study to get the specific skills and qualifications you need to progress. Teaching is one of these careers, but fortunately you can continue working while studying part-time for your postgraduate degree.
The Christian Teacher, offered in partnership through Christian Heritage College and Morling College, is a quality teacher training program founded on a Christian worldview. Students study online part-time, then do placement in a Christian school where they learn teaching from an experienced teacher mentor.
All students enrolling in The Christian Teacher are eligible for Commonwealth supported places, making this degree extremely affordable.
Opportunity for professional growth, family-friendly hours and meaningful work that makes a difference in the lives of the next generation are just some of the reasons why people transition to teaching. If this appeals to you, visit The Christian Teacher to find out more.
