Stay Charged
Bible & theology professional development

Morling launched its Stay Charged Professional Development program in 2023, on both our Sydney and Perth campuses, as well as via livestream - from anywhere in the world!.

Stay Charged is designed for graduates wanting to pursue further academic study, and to provide ongoing professional development for pastors and Christian leaders.

The suite of subjects has been carefully chosen to offer advanced study in Old and New Testament, Christian Thought, Leadership, Preaching, and Spiritual Formation. To fit in with the schedule of busy pastors, they are offered as intensives (several consecutive days) or semi-intensives (e.g. five Thursdays during the semester), with livestreaming available for those unable to make it on campus.

If you wish to study for academic credit you can enrol in a Single Unit for Credit or as units included as part of a longer award offered by the Australian College of Theology and delivered by Morling College. For information on the entry requirements and course structures of these awards please follow the links below.

If you study at undergraduate level you can include these four units (along with additional units to complete the course requirements) as part of an Undergraduate Certificate of Ministry or Diploma of Ministry or continue with further study to complete a longer award such as an Associate Degree of Ministry or a Bachelor of Ministry.

If you study at postgraduate level you can complete these four units and graduate with a Graduate Certificate of Divinity, or continue with further study to complete a longer award such as a Graduate Diploma of Divinity, a Master of Theological Studies, a Master of Ministry or a Master of Divinity.

Making sense of the Bible for ourselves and others is central to Christian ministry (whatever form that might take). But it can be surprisingly complex.

We need to grapple with big questions about how texts work, how we should interpret them, and how to help others make sense of the Scriptures. These questions are particularly acute when we come to read Genesis 1–3, especially as we consider its implications for issues such as science and the environment, marriage and family, and gender and sexuality.

This unit will help you come to grips with this broad and diverse and important set of questions. You will be equipped to develop a coherent understanding of texts and their interpretation, a deeper understanding of the meaning and significance of Genesis 1–3, and an enhanced ability to use the Bible in Christian ministry.

Agree or disagree with him, there is no getting around Karl Barth in modern theology.

The premier theologian of the twentieth-century, Karl Barth lived in tumultuous times and constructed a theology to guide the church in its life and witness in these times. His theological output was enormous and creative, changing the trajectory of modern theological thought, reorienting it to the gospel. His work continues to inspire and guide many today.

In this unit we set Barth in his historical and theological context and engage directly with a selection of his theological writings to

  1. provide an orientation for reading Barth well, and
  2. gain an understanding of the central aspects of his thought.

It’s no longer enough to just learn how to exegete the scriptures.

In our highly diverse culture, church leaders need to be able to exegete (read, interpret) the world around them. These are skills usually reserved for cross-cultural missionaries, but now every leader needs to be culturally literate.

This unit will give you the basic tools for reading your context and responding to it with gospel ministry.

Although many of Jesus's contemporaries regarded Jesus as a figure like Elijah or like one of the prophets, Peter proclaimed that he was the "Christ" or the "anointed one" (Mark 8:27-29). However, prophets, priests, and rulers could all be anointed by God in the Hebrew Bible. In this unit, students will explore how different New Testament writers identify Jesus as the royal heir of King David, the prophet like Moses, the heavenly high priest, the Son of Man in Daniel's vision, or the Wisdom and Word of God. They will discover why some Second Temple Jews, who were known for their exclusive covenantal allegiance to the God of Israel in the polytheistic religious environment of the Graeco-Roman world, began to reverence Jesus in ways that prepared the ground for the development of the later Christian creeds. The assignments will focus on how the ancient Christ followers built on earlier Jewish views about divine intermediary agents and on the academic debates about the Christologies of select New Testament writings.

The Eighth Century Prophets are Hosea, Amos, Micah, and Isaiah and the focus of this unit is on the books of Hosea and Amos. This unit seeks to understand the message of these prophets in their historical and literary contexts and see how the issues that they address are contemporary.

The Eighth Century Prophets challenge us to worship God, not just by singing and going to church, but by treating one another properly – for instance, being honest and fair in business, not worshipping money and possessions, and looking after the poor and vulnerable. They call on us to serve others rather than using others to serve us. They ask us to think about God’s character as merciful and just and point us to the person and work of Jesus.
