Answering a Higher Calling

Tuesday 21st July 2020

Are you interested in studying counselling?  Do you have previous study or work experience but isn't sure whether a career change is right for you?

I am currently studying a Master of Counselling at Morling College, after working in a different field altogether. I trained as a mechanical engineer in India and worked in the automobile and construction industry for nearly 14 years.

In the last couple of years of my career as an engineer, I started to feel restless since I felt no sense of fulfilment in my job.  I wanted to do something that I was passionate about.

"The year before I started studying at Morling, I lost my mother to cancer and that led me to question what I was doing with my life."

I took a month off work, prayed about it and started looking at other options to pursue.

I had a passion for helping people and when someone suggested counselling at Morling College, I attended the open day to find out more. After enrolling, I gave myself a year to find out if this was where God wanted me to be.

"It was not until I started studying that I discovered what a blessing it was to be surrounded by like-minded people (lecturers and classmates) who shared the same passion and were willing to support me in this journey."

From a professional point of view, I have gained a lot of skills and knowledge to walk alongside a person during their difficulties. I also have had the opportunity to understand myself and grow as a person.

"I have learnt to become more self aware and reflective in my life."

If you are considering studying counselling at Morling College, I would say give it a go.  If you have a heart for people and want to make even the tiniest difference in someone's life, this course can equip you to do that.

Maybe some of the following sound like you:

  • I have a bachelor’s degree but it is not related to anything to do with counselling.
  • I love coming alongside people in my church who are struggling with issues, and have been told that I am a good listener.
  • My minister has encouraged me to seek more training because I really think the Lord is calling me to re-train as a counsellor.

If any of the above sound familiar, read on…

The Master of Counselling course at Morling College doesn’t assume any prior knowledge of counselling. You could enrol in the Graduate Certificate and see how your study goes, or you could commit to the Masters from the start in consultation with course advisers.
