Academic Studies in Theology Certificate

Course Description

The Academic Studies in Theology Certificate introduces students to units in Old Testament, New Testament or Jesus and the Gospels, Christian Belief or Christian Worldview, and Study Skills, as well as 3 electives in Certificate level units. This course is delivered both on-campus and online, and is a preparatory and enabling pre-diploma program.

This course is not eligible for FEE-Help but is approved for Centrelink payments (when taken by eligible candidates in at least 75% of a full time mode. The ACT has assessed a full time load for this course as four (4) units per semester).

Entry Requirements
  • Academic Suitability: Satisfactory completion of Year 10 in an Australian school system (or equivalent); OR other persons approved by the ACT Registrar.
  • Language Qualifications for NESB: IELTS 6.0 overall with minimum of 5.5 in each subtest OR 10 years in Australia with English being the language primarily spoken both at home and work.

Students are required to provide proof of ID (either Birth Certificate or Passport) when they apply.

Career Options

The course provides foundational knowledge and skills appropriate to Christian ministry, but not to the depth required for leaders and teachers in congregations, for which vocations the Bachelor of Theology, Bachelor of Ministry, Master of Ministry, and the Master of Divinity have been devised. It is ideal for anyone wanting a short course to target specific areas of study (e.g. youth/children's ministry, pastoral care, Bible overview), or who wants to sample theological education without committing to a longer award.

Graduates of this course may be well-informed members of a church-ministry team with shared responsibility for the Christian education program, or a member of a church pastoral ministry team under the leadership of a qualified practitioner with a degree in theology or ministry.

This course does not does not provide an AQF qualification.
