The Pentateuch forms the foundation for the rest of the Bible. It introduces God as creator, saviour, covenant maker, lawgiver, and judge. It also reveals the purpose God has given humanity, to image his benevolent rule in the world, but also how humanity rejects God’s rule and fails to live as God intended.
The Pentateuch shows us how God reconciles a sinful people to himself through redemption, ransom, and cleansing. It also tells of God’s purpose to bless all the nations through the people of Israel, and ultimately through his promised king. This all lays the foundation for better understanding the person and work of Jesus and what it means to live as his people today.
This unit explores these themes with a special focus on the books of Genesis and Deuteronomy.
