OT010 / OT011 - Former Prophets (English / Hebrew)

Narrative plays a crucial role in shaping us and our identity as Christians. Yet the narratives of the Hebrew Bible/ Old Testament are too often neglected in Christian theology and ministry, or relegated to Sunday School.

In OT010/011 we will explore the narratives of the Former Prophets (Joshua, Judges, Samuel and Kings), paying particular attention to the books of Samuel. We will exegete substantial portions of 1 and 2 Samuel (either the English text of 1 Samuel 1–12 and 2 Samuel 5–7, 13–18; or the [translation and] exegesis of the Hebrew text of 1 Samuel 10–12 and 2 Samuel 5–7).

As we explore Israel’s transition from tribal confederacy to monarchy we will gain a deeper understanding of the role of Samuel and Saul and David—and God—in Israel’s evolving life and faith. And as we do so we will come to see the theological richness of these texts, and have our life and faith shaped by them afresh.
