Have you ever wondered about the personal benefits of studying theology? Here are twelve reasons why you might want to give it a go!
In order for our faith to grow, we need to continue to increase our knowledge of God. Yes, we can do it alone, but what’s better than having a supportive community behind you as you explore God’s Word? Titus 1:1-2 reminds us that “the knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness in the hope of eternal life”
To be a disciple is to know the instructions of the teacher well. Studying theology is a great way to explore deeply what God’s word means to you, to the world now and into the future. It provides excellent guidance for a Christian’s walk with Christ.
Although a theological qualification is definitely not required to receive salvation, studying Theology allows further understanding of our need of it.
Often when we pray, we are seeking some form of guidance or advice from God. But did you know, there are many occasions where the answers may already be in front of us, in the Bible?
Having a theological education allows you to better recognise how and what God is speaking to you.
By having solid doctrines and understanding them well, Christians are able to hold firmly to the truth and not let false teaching or popular culture deceive them.
Christians believe that it is important to live in light of the Cross and with Jesus within them. And through the study of theology which enriches understanding of God’s Word to us, Christians can have their worldviews guided and formed correctly.
There’s the old Sunday School saying of the Bible being an acronym for “basic information before leaving earth”. Studying theology is a continual reminder of how we need to keep our feet on the right-path and follow a Godly direction in our everyday lives.
Ephesians 4 talks about transitioning from baby food to solid adult food as a metaphor for how Christians can grow and mature over time. This is achievable through having a strong grasp of the teachings of Jesus. As we mature as Christians, we will also be able to grow in our discernment of things in the world.
One of the great blessings that come with studying theology is that we can take pleasure in the fullness of what God has offered us in hope, peace and joy. The Word of God isn’t just for commandments or laws, but also to encourage us in our everyday lives.
Through studying theology, we can better appreciate the reasons that we ought to obey God. We not only learn about His creation but also how He loves us and wants the best for us. Understanding his words better results in more obedience.
Christians are blessed because the theology of God is a shared common among believers. This is a great encouragement to know that you are not alone and such is hard to obtain elsewhere.
Having sound doctrine that is actively practised is a result of good theology education. Churches operating with sound doctrine are often the strongest. As we remain evangelical and true to God’s Word, good theology provides Christians with a basis for how churches operate best.
